The Dary Eyes + The Damage

on Friday, July 19, 2013 8:00 pm to Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 1:00 am

Location: Boars Head

The Dark Eyes are an Rock/Alternative//Metal Four piece from Stourbridge. The band formed in 2008 and is comprised of Jordan Carrier (Vocals, Guitar), Charlotte Mote (Keys, Vocals) Jak Batchalor (Drums, Vocals) and Luke Rivers (Bass, Vocals).

Four different personalities with wildly different personalities and influences collide together to produce a unique and highly evolved sound. The band is blessed with the ability to write songs in a diverse number of styles, bridging the gap between pop, rock, alternative and metal. Yet, the songs are visceral, instinctive and natural; they come from the gut rather than from some over-thought, over-analysed ideology, and are all the better for it.

In the time they have been together, they have played all over the Midlands area, in both local and national venues, and have generated a dedicated following. Vocalist/guitarist Jordan Carrier said, “We love playing all different kinds of venues and too many different people. We love to have a good time. We try to get the crowd involved. Response is everything.”

They are equally at home in an acoustic setting, and most of their songs can be deconstructed sonically to fit any environment, which is a testament to both the strength of their songs and to their abilities as songwriters. The Dark Eyes are hoping to take their songs and their sound to audiences further afield.

The Dark Eyes are planning to go into new areas around the country next year and hope to widen there song writing skills to try and attract new people to there fan base.

Vault of Eagles

on Friday, June 28, 2013 8:00 pm to Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 1:00 am

Location: Boars Head

"A fantastic slab of Neolithic yet contemporary alternative Rock, heavy enough to knock down buildings but delivered with a surprising twist of ethereal beauty." (Green Man Music)

"VoE are one of the few bands around who can rinse our eyes and ears, finding something new to say, which is risky and different.” – Carlisle Egypt (Band Of Joy)

Vault Of Eagles are a rock/alternative trio from the Midlands. The band was formed in 2010 and is comprised of Mari Randle (vocals, guitar), Hetty Randle (bass, vocals) and Scott Ewins (drums).

Visceral, angular and exposed, VoE twist their influences beyond recognition, from their psychedelic, dirty riffs to the unbridled swagger and sway of the rhythm section. Their music traverses a vast sonic spectrum of blues, psychedelia, grunge, alternative and rock, all compounded into one. Lead vocalist and guitarist, Mari, said, "This is the music we grew up with, and it's woven into the fabric of our creativity. We want to take these influences further, and make them our own."

In contrast to the over-processed and over-hyped pop culture of today, where music is a monument of style-over-substance, a disposable, ungratifying commodity, VoE are an anomaly. Much of their artistic vision is made on their own terms: the artwork is intricate and meticulously hand-drawn, the t-shirts hand-painted and unique, and, likewise, the music drawn from their own unadulterated worldview, unashamed and unapologetic. A far cry from current trends, and all the better for it.

"Vault Of Eagles have already earned a serious reputation for delivering solid, edgy, hard-hitting rock." – Slap! Magazine

Mari's distorted guitar riffs are dirge-like elegies, angst-ridden and turbulent, contrasted with an illuminating sense of melody, which proves a potent combination. Hetty's bass lines are urgent and insistent, weaving their way through the aural dissonance, while Scott's powerful drumming keeps the entire ensemble grounded. Mari's voice is soulful, dynamic; whispering intently one moment, a tortured wail the next, with Hetty's layered harmonies bringing light and shade to the mix. Lyrically, they approach a myriad of subjects, taking a magnifying glass to various emotional and social themes. From the inner struggle of the human condition, to modern-day consumerism, to the self-imposed prisons we create for ourselves.

"Songs that are powerful, hard, moody, melodic, a 70s groove with the influences of their generation of grunge and 21st century blues/rock... Dark, atmospheric, cool and edgy... 5/5" – Jack Caplan, It's Alive! Magazine

Discussing the band's genesis, Mari, said, "We didn't set out with a grand design: our music is a melting pot of ideas and influences – music, art, poetry, literature – all of it comes into play. But, most importantly, it doesn't come from the head, it comes from the gut. It's primal, guttural, part improvised, part instinct."

"This band really stand apart, musically and lyrically, they have to be seen live! Unique and total quality." – BBC Introducing

They have been a fixture of the live music scene, both in the Midlands and further afield, playing clubs, national venues and festivals alike. It's not just audiences they have impressed, but also critics, too, with rapturous reviews and write-ups in local press and radio, including 'BBC Introducing Hereford & Worcester'.

Hetty, who is responsible for all of the band's artwork, adds, "Everything we do is a work of art. From the music and album covers, to the posters and t-shirts, each one is hand-crafted and unique. It's all an extension of us, as artists. We take the time, effort and consideration to make sure everything we do is created with the utmost integrity."

The band have released two EPs to date – 'EP#1' and 'Live At Worcester Music Festival 2011' – and are poised to release another two, contrastingly different, EPs – 'Unplugged' and 'Plastic Culture Human Vulture' – in October and November respectively. Each release is preceded by a single, 'In Sanity' and 'Chains (Unplugged)', both of which are available as a free download exclusively from http://vaultofeagles.bandcamp.com/. All current and forthcoming releases are available from Bandcamp, Amazon, and iTunes.

The Trevor Burton Band

on Saturday, June 15, 2013 8:00 pm to Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 1:00 am

Location: Boars Head

Trevor Burton was born in Aston, Birmingham. He started playing guitar at a young age and by 1963 was leading his own group called The Everglades. In 1964 he joined Danny King & The Mayfair Set, along with Keith Smart formerly of The Everglades (drums), Roger Harris (keyboards), Denis Ball (Bass) and vocalist King.

Trevor Burton was a founding member of the sixties chart topping band The Move and was initially with them from 1966-1969 and is touring again in 2010 as ‘The Move featuring Trevor Burton & Bev Bevan’ with ‘The Animals and Friends’.

When he left in 1969 he stayed down south with his close friend Steve Winwood; Steve had just formed the band Traffic. Trevor Trevor decided to chill for a while, but soon got the urge to play live again, this has always been his first love. He got in touch with Steve Gibbons with the view to forming a new band, together with Denny Laine formerly with the Moody Blues, and Allen White from The Plastic Ono Band.they formed the band called Balls. After the split with Balls in 1971, Trevor spent the next few years as one of the top session musicians with Island Records. At the request of Raymond Froggatt, Trevor returned to his hometown of Birmingham where he worked with Ray until 1976.

Trevor teamed up once again with his close friend Steve Gibbons to enjoy chart success and top 10 hits with the Steve Gibbons Band. For the next 7 years he toured the world with Steve. He left in 1983 to form his own band playing his unique style of blues. They started performing twice weekly at the Red Lion, Sparkbrook, Birmingham with a line up including sax player Steve Ajao. In 1985 the band recorded an album entitled 'Double Zero'.

He teamed up with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin as one of the Journeymen Musicians. Then he joined The Big Town Playboys touring the UK and Europe, he performed shows with Noel Reading a friend from the 60s and spent 9 months on the road with Dexies Midnight Runners.

As if this isn't enough he has also played with Jimi Hendrix and also appears on one of his albums!!! Now Trevor still gets the buzz from playing his kind of music to a receptive audience. In 1993 he called on Maz Mitrenko to join the band, also former ELO keyboard player Richard Tandy was with him for a few years. Trevor has had various rhythm sections but never really settled with any until November 1999 when he asked Bill Jefferson (Drummer) to join the band. Pez Connor rejoined the band in April 2009.and The Trevor Burton Band is now unstoppable. It is the most exciting live band ever to grace the stage. With the new line up having the chemistry, and telepathy that Trevor has been looking for. See them to live and enjoy the moment, you won't be disappointed.

Bill Jefferson (Drums) Bill has rattled the drums on and off with Midland bands such as Hazard, City Limits, Dick Tracy Band, Dangerous Sisters, Led Astray, and many more. Nick named "Bill The Brick" (With a B), he was so popular because of his simple solid style of drumming that bands were fighting over him. He gained a reputation as the ideal dep. drummer for most midland bands. Trevor called upon "The Brick" to do a couple of gigs in September 1999. It was like Cinderella's slipper ‘what a fit!’, and he hasn't been home since.

Pez Connor (Bass Guitar & Vocals ) Pez joined the band in April 2009. He has been playing bass for 25 years and during that time has covered all forms of music from country, rock, funk, fusion and blues. His connection with The Trevor Burton Band goes back to the days before he could even play the bass. He like many others would follow The Burton Band all over the country to watch the guys play their mind blowing sets. At the age of 22 he started playing the bass for his Father’s Country Band. He says this gave him a great foundation of strict tempo rhythms which allowed him to progress to more advanced styles of playing. Pez has over the years played and sessioned for many accomplished bands such as High Climate (80's Funk), Life Style (80's Funk), The A to Zee Band (Blues/Rock), The Mazeraties (Maz Mitrenko), The Danny Steel Orchestra (Steely Dan Tribute), The Soul Providers (Soul/Motown), Souled Out To Funk (Soul/Funk) to name but a few. In early 2002 Pez got a call from Maz to dep for the band on a couple of gigs, this led to a 2 year stint which included a tour of Germany along with many Blues Festivals and gigs throughout the UK. In April this year he received a call yet again, this time from Bill Jefferson to join the Band. He jumped at the chance, and this time he is here to stay.

Steve Ignorant with Paranoid Visions + Pax

on Saturday, June 08, 2013 8:00 pm to Sunday, June 09, 2013 at 1:00 am

Location: Boars Head

Formed in Dublin in 1981, Paranoid Visions quickly allied themselves to the anarcho punk fraternity of the second wave of punk rock in the early 80's. Heavily influenced by the Crass ethic of DIY music, the band formed their own F.O.A.D label and licensed their records to All The Madmen, home of the Mob, Thatcher on Acid, Blyth Power and the Astronauts.

Ticketed Event : £12.00, Available at the Bar.. Or can purchase though PayPal. Please message or email me for details.

Paranoid Visons played gigs and toured with the likes of Poison Girls, DIRT, Blyth Power, Subhumans and The Instigators. In the early 90's they played with bands like Snuff, the Macc Ladds and Manic Street Preachers before calling it a day in 1992. Despite their disbanding, the 90's saw Paranoid Visions becoming the biggest punk band Ireland had ever produced, featuring on several TV shows, newspapers and being offered numerous record deals from Major labels. In 1996 they reformed to play support on some dates for the Sex Pistols Filthy Lucre tour. In 2001 they reformed again and played with the Damned, The Dickies and at the Wasted Festival in Morecombe. While these reunions were always designed to be short lived, with the 2005 reunion, formed in support of the re-release of their back catalogue, it was decided to continue the momentum.

March 2007 saw the release of the album "40 SHADES OF GANGREEN", the first new material for 16 years. The run up to this release saw the band playing 35 dates with bands such as The Levellers, The Damned and Sonic Boom Six as well as 25 UK and Ireland headline slots.

Since 2007 the band has been consistently gathering momentum, with a fixed line-up, to include regular gigs in Ireland, UK, USA and Europe (with bands suck as The Lurkers, Subhumans, GBH and Goldblade), Rebellion and Punx Picnic, the release of 'The Treasure From The Wasteland EP' (2008), singles 'I Am The One - 1970sICK EP' and 'Strobelight And Torture' (2009), album 'Beware Of The God' (2009), plus a series of 'Hate From The Cities' and 'Live In Fibbers' compilations. There have been several appearances including two feature films ('3Crosses' and 'Little Foxes'), the Podge & Rodge Show for RTE Television, and radio sessions for Phantom and 2FM. This has all been supported with much national press coverage and includes extensive interviews with State Magazine, Hot Press and The Big Cheese.

2010 saw the release of a retrospective, 'Black Operations In The Red Mist', which garnered universal praise in countries such as Germany, Japan, USA and Holland.

2011 started with a bang with the announcement of the bands first trip to the USA for 3 highly successful headline shows and the release of the "Der Election EP" which became the first Irish punk record to hit the national charts in 30 years, debuting at number 6, one place above Take That and one behind JLS and Tiny Tempah!!!! The band are currently completing their new album, entitled "Hail Tsunmami" for release in 2012 on Overground Records / FOAD. The album will be preceded by a single in November on FOAD (CD) of Outsider Artist (featuring TV Smith) / Control (featuring The Shend) / Prophet For The Lost (featuring The Blame) and 6 live bonus tracks. A 7" version on Inflammable Material / FOAD will be released at the same time as a limited edition.

On November 19th the the band will support Steve Ignorant at his Last (ever) Supper show at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London.

2012 saw the release of thye bands most critcally acclaimed and commercially succesful album to date 2escape from the austerity complex"
2013 sees the released of the "up the anti" ep, via scarred for life records and two releases where the band are joined by Crass's Steve Ignorant: "Join the Dots ep" (7") on all the madmen records and the album "when...?" on Overground records.

on Friday, May 31, 2013 8:00 pm to Saturday, June 01, 2013 at 1:00 am

Location: Boars Head

On a murky December evening in 2006, in a converted coldroom in Worcester, Mudball got together for their first practice...

To date Mudball have appeared and played live on Sky RED TV, performed live on air for the BBC H&W Stage at The Worcester Music Festival, won the EMA award for Best Music Video 2010, secured a number 1 spot for 3 weeks on the Tourdates unsigned charts and stayed in the top 10 for 8 weeks! Mudball have had lots of radio airplay including BBC H&W, local, university and online radio stations (including American iChannel). Mudball have played many festivals and gigs across the country including headlining The Fairfield Music Festival.

Now finishing their first EP, which includes 'Dayglows' produced by Joe Gibb (3 Colours Red, Funeral for a friend, Brigade) Mudball are stamping their incredible sound and style wherever they go. This is by no mean feat though, as collectively they've supported the likes of Robert Plant, Amy Winehouse, Fine Young Cannibals and Apes Pigs & Spacemen to name but a few.

Together they bring the best of Grunge, PowerPop, Metal and American Punk styles, which are the cataylist of Mudball's big sound.

Location: Boars Head

What are Flipron? An English rock band from Glastonbury, UK. Their music was described by Music Connection (USA based music industry magazine) as “Barrelhouse Britpop” which the band thought was a pretty good description. Other descriptions they like include “Psychedelic Honkytonk” & “like Stephen Fry wrestling with Ian Dury on a Mississippi riverboat” A more sober description was “eccentric English rock”, which is reasonably accurate if a little formal. Their songs are noted for their strong & wordy lyrical content.

Their main influences include The Kinks & Small Faces, Alex Harvey, Sparks, Madness, The Specials, Ziggy-era Bowie, The Damned, Ian Dury, Tom Waits, early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, old Hawaiian & blues records, Hank Williams, western swing, 20s 30s & 40s Americana & jazz, & mid-60s psychedelia, surf & garage.

on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 - 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Location: Mouth and Music

Our reputation is building! So much so that one of our featured artists this month is travelling all the way from Manchester to be with us! We're over the moon that

DOMINIC BERRY
"Manchester's queer vegan poet"

has agreed to appear alongside local stars

JOHNNY GASH & THE BLEEDING CAT FACES

Dominic has been described thus: “Exuberant, lively, expressive and totally nuts, Dominic owns the stage.” (Writers Connect)

And “Johnny Gash combines the demeanour, wit, and appearance of Jarvis Cocker with the melancholic madness of Morrissey, in an unholy alchemy of the absurd” (Gary Longden)

Heather Wastie will be MC

Comments from last month's featured performers:
"I love the Kidderminster poets & always enjoy performing there." Ddotti Bluebell
"... the best spoken word/music evening I have been to for a long time and it was a huge privilege to headline it!"
Shambollix

Open floor sign-up from 7.30
Admission £3 (free to performers)

Get there early to book your spot. If it looks likely there'll be a big turn-out, we'll be downstairs rather than in the Gallery. We don't want to alarm the Gallery floor again!!

Ronin

on Friday, May 10, 2013 - 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Location: Boars Head

Worcester would not strike many as being at the forefront of the music scene, porcelain and teashops yes: but somewhere between the rolling hills and the rambling river a sonic storm is growing. Fast becoming well known for their high energy, high emotion live shows; Ronin offer the antidote to a generation calling out for new direction, calling out for something real.

Loz was born surrounded by music. Kit was born deaf.

Descended from pirates and smugglers, the three years Kit has been living in Worcester mark the longest he’s stayed anywhere; his life so far reads a strange tale of challenges, cage fighting, being on the wrong end of attempted murder and forgetting how to play violin; the only constant in his life has been singing.

Somebody moved there by choice. That’s how Dave’s story started, brought up in the middle of no-where Dave turned to his brothers bass guitar and his fathers LP’s, cue montage and hey presto: Young Dave.

Born double handicapped, being left handed and ginger, Jake locked himself away from the world, practicing, learning, tech-ing, biding his time, until at last the time was right, to strike at the music scene with his dynamic and unusual playing style.

Loz’s toys as a child were his father’s guitars; he truly has riffery for blood and rhythm for soul. Playing on stage from a young age in a myriad of styles, Loz has paid his dues, and if Dave & Jake are the back bone of Ronin, Loz is the heart.

The synergy of massively different musical backgrounds of the members make Ronin an unmissable experience.

Ronin tread new ground by combining classic elements from blues, rock and pop with unusual synths and theremin, this, topped with passionate belief, sing-along choruses and catchy melodies make the Worcester based four piece one to watch

The crowd oriented energetic performances of Ronin are not to be missed.
